Reading time - 1 minute, 47 seconds
Love reading but limit yourself to the number of books you buy? Wish your installation library had access to move books? Or maybe you’re interested in exploring a new career, learning a language, or finding a new way to entertain your kids? Well, you’re in luck. Say hello to the new and improved military library.
Exciting Updates to the DoD Library
Recently, the Department of Defense (DoD) merged with all branch libraries to give military families access to not only their installation’s resources but the entire DoD library too! That means it’s the perfect time to read that book that you’ve been waiting for but couldn’t find. Online libraries offer plenty of free resources for you and your family, ranging from research and reference materials to books on just about every subject imaginable.
This new merger works with the popular and user-friendly Libby app. With Libby, you have the option to connect multiple libraries to your account, so there’s never any worry about finding the book you want. If that weren’t enough page-turning news, the DoD also announced there’s a free extension called “Library Extension” that works with your browser on Amazon and Goodreads to show you if your local library has a copy of the book you want to read. Keep track of your “to be read” pile, write reviews, and see what your friends are reading when you utilize the Library Extension function. The DoD library is not connected to Audible at this time, but there are several thousand audiobooks you can check out for up to three weeks at a time.
The newly improved DoD library offers plenty of extras besides books, too. Children might enjoy BookFlix, a service that pairs classic video storybooks with related nonfiction titles - a perfect way to reinforce early reading skills and develop knowledge. Explore Primary is a database of colorful and fun resources to help kids in grades K-5 learn about the world. Find out more about your library’s resources here.
Access to Updated Military Library Resources
Getting a card/access is free and easy. At your installation library, ask the circulation desk to update your account with a current email address. This becomes your login ID. You’ll need to create a pin to access the updated library resources.
