To help make this moving season as simple and stress-free as possible, we’ve assembled a list of commonly used terms you might encounter during your Permanent Change of Station (PCS). These terms can all be found in our Moving Series blogs that cover everything from how to do a PPM to what you’re entitled to when you PCS.
Defense Personal Property System (DPS) - website for filing claims relating to PCS damage
Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) - the primary point of contact for travel relating to PCSs
Department of Defense (DoD) - America’s largest government agency, provides military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation’s freedom
Dislocation Allowance (DLA) - an entitlement that partially reimburses Service Members for expenses incurred while relocating during a PCS
Force Protection (FP) - a term used by DoD to describe preventative measures taken to mitigate hostile actions in specific areas or against specific populations
Full Replacement Value (FRV) - the amount a moving company would have to pay to replace an item
Government Constructive Cost (GCC) - the amount the government would pay to move the same weight to or from an authorized location, used in determining payment rates for a Personally Procured Move
Household Goods (HHG) - items and goods within your house
Mileage Reimbursement rates - rate structure the DoD uses to determine how much to reimburse Service Members who chose to do a PPM
Military Claims Office (MCO) - an installation-specific office that helps with filing claims associated with PCS damage or inconveniences
Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) - duty installations located outside the continental United States, which includes Alaska and Hawaii, among other locations
Permanent Change of Station (PCS) - orders issued by the DoD for a Service Member to relocate to a new duty station
Personally Procured Move (PPM) - formerly known as a Do It Yourself (DITY), a way for military families to move themselves during a PCS
Required Delivery Date (RDD) - the date the moving company must deliver your HHG
Temporary Lodging Expenses (TLE) - an allowance that partially reimburses Service Members for lodging and meal expenses during a PCS
Transportation Office (TO) - an installation office that will assist the Service Member in coordinating a PCS
Transportation Service Provider (TSP) - the contracted moving company assigned to move HHG and UAB
Unaccompanied Baggage (UAB) - an express shipping option during a PCS that usually arrives at a new duty station earlier than HHG
